Native Wildflowers

Flowers typically have white rays with yellow center disks, but ours have rays are pink-tinged, violet or purple. Plants grown in part shade or in rich, moist soils tend to flop and need support. Plants grown in drier soils will grow shorter, but often less vigorously with inferior flowering.

Native to marshes, fens, ditches and wet woodland in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is probably one of the most ancient British native plants, surviving the glaciations and flourishing after the last retreat of the ice, in a landscape inundated with glacial meltwaters.

A dioecious plant, it requires a male and female to procreate. It typically inhabits woodlands, shaded meadows, and sends up a stalk of lovely white flowers arranged in a spiral.

It is a herbaceous plant found in wetlands and riparian forests of eastern North America. The flowers are white, borne in late summer and early fall. It is used as a method of birth control by Abenaki people.

Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought.

Regal Purple Flowers will make a definite statement in your shade garden. Although it is at home in the shade, in fertile, moist soils it can handle a fair amount of sun. This is a superb plant for cottage gardens, beds and borders. Best in groupings or massed.

Early Delicate Beauty. A diminutive relative of the native Bleeding Heart and closely resembling Squirrel Corn. They bloom from April to early May.

Shooting Star, is a perennial wildflower native to the woodlands and open clearings in North America. The species is best grown in evenly moist, humusy, well-drained soil in part shade. It will tolerate a range of sun conditions including full shade and full sun as long as evenly moist, well-draining soils are provided.

'White Swan' has large, daisy-like flowers with slightly drooping, white petals (ray flowers) and large, coppery-orange (often with a green tinge) central cones. Long summer bloom period.

A long lasting perennial for the sunny border. Its cone-shaped flowering heads are usually, but not always purple. Products using components of the plant and other members of the genus are marketed as medicines for the common cold.

A delicate pale lavender member of the aster family and listed as endangered in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Naturalizes easily to shady forest floors. It is valued for its late summer to fall bloom and large, attractive lower leaves.

Flower heads are subtended by whitish, pointed bracts and leaves resemble the sword-like, bristled blades of a yucca. It is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun, but prefers dryish, sandy soils.

It flowers from mid-summer to the first frosts, makes an attractive backdrop in garden plots, and is very attractive to butterflies, bees, and other nectar-feeding insects. It is found in moist, rich soil alongside streams and marshes, or in wet forests.

A great pollinator plant for native bees, and smaller butterflies. Blue flowers appear fluffy and delicate. They can handle a range of sun and moisture conditions.

It has nice size and late bloom for borders, native plant gardens, wildflower gardens, cottage gardens, woodland gardens or banks of ponds or water gardens. A handsome plant for the white component of your red, white, and blue garden. Add Lobelia, and mist flower for the rest.

A late-blooming, tall addition to the garden that is excellent for pollinators. They can become quite tall if conditions are right, forming dense bunches at the base and stems that arch outwards.

A pale lavender aster with large basal leaves. This is a woodland species that will grow in shade, but best flowering and growth is in part shade. It spreads by rhizomes and self-seeding to form colonies in optimum growing conditions.

Grows in dry to moist woods and is normally abundant when found. Plants go dormant in early summer after seed is ripe and dispersed.

Cultivated for its bright, showy yellow flowers that bloom in the late summer.
